We are the Southern Arts & Culture Coalition.

We are a grassroots-to-grassroots coalition building economic and organizational power for arts and cultural organizations across the South. Though our Southern legacy of music, literature, food, and organizing has molded our nation’s identity, our communities receive less than one-tenth of the national average of philanthropic funding per capita.

Together, as a grassroots-to-grassroots coalition, we aim to build economic and organizational power for intergenerational, cross-cultural and economically diverse grassroots arts and cultural organizations across the regional South of the United States.

Who can join?

We invite Southern* grassroots arts or cultural organizations to join! What do we mean by grassroots?

You do need to:

  • be creating and facilitating meaningful programs or projects

  • be based in the regional South of the United States

  • be grassroots (community-led & run)

You don’t need to:

  • be a non-profit

  • have paid staff

  • have a brick-and-mortar space

Coalition membership includes:

  • Shared financial resources, collectively raised and democratically held and distributed within the coalition

  • Opportunities for leadership development & skill sharing

  • Facilitated collaboration, shared strategy, and leadership training for coalition members

  • Networking & partnership building at in-person coalition convenings

*Our working definition of the South includes Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. We respect people’s ability to self-identify. If you feel you belong in this coalition and are not based in one of these places, let’s talk!

In the South, a region long overlooked by public and private funders, organizations come in many shapes and sizes: a warehouse-turned-local art studio, a shut-down school-turned-community center, a group of neighbors gathered around a kitchen table. Because these organizations don’t always fit the traditional mold, they often struggle to gain the resources they need to survive. We call these organizations Community Centers of Power.

Join us at our 2023 Launch & Convening!

We’re so excited for our very first in-person coalition meeting. Join us this September in Richmond, Virginia for food, friendship, music, and solidarity!
